Leadership and Management

"The quality of leadership and management are the key factors driving improvement. What works best is a business-like approach underpinned by the values of social care and an understanding of why it matters to communities."

Audit Commission Director of Joint Reviews, Sue Mead, in Overview of Seven Years of Joint Reviews (Audit Commission, 2004).

Skills for Care London continues to support the Leaders and Managers of social care provision in the region by delivering a number of initiatives. In November 2007, Skills for Care London held its first ever Business Leadership in Care conference, which was attended by over 250 delegates from the sector.

Other initiatives delivered across London have been Action Learning Sets for owner/managers of care organisations and the Successful Supervisory Management Program which saw over 200 graduate from the course, which was specifically designed and developed for those employed in line management and supervisory roles in Adult Social Care.

The above programs were developed by Skills for Care London as pilots, and we continue to work to source further funding with the aim of being able to offer more development opportunities such as these in the future.

In the meantime, we will continue to promote Business Excellence through effective Leadership and Management by identifying gaps in current practice and provision and seeking creative solutions, exploring and sharing good practice across the region through employer engagement and consultation and developing a regional 'Point of Access' for information on L&M on the SfC London website.
